Leopard and the Quicklook server
For the last few days I have noticed that the fans on my MacBook Pro have been running really fast most of the time. I have also been having some applications not function properly. This has lead me to start paying attention to what is going on with this system.
What I noticed was that the Quick Look Server process was pegged. When this happened it would cause my laptop to get hot and some apps to stop responding. This mostly happened after the screen saver was on.

Now before you just start bashing because it is a Mac. remember that other new release of operating systems have had more serious issues then this. Nevertheless I hope Apple releases a patch…. and SOON!!!
Same problem here, Leopard 10.5.0 on a G4 Mac Mini running hot because of the “Quick Look Server” process using all available CPU power. I can’t find good information about this software on the web. The Activity Monitor gives some information, but a quit of the process is followed by it starting up again. It seems however to be related to running this software: Transmission (0.93)
I expect that the Transmission application (or any torrent application) is downloading potentially large files that are mostly invalid. For example, when downloading a movie file, the full file will be created up front, and the content is filled in as it is downloaded. From the viewpoint of Time Machine, Spotlight and Quick Look the file changes frequently but fails to be indexed - which may lead to many repeated calls.
For Spotlight and Time Machine, this can be fixed by excluding the relevant download directory from indexing / backups. I don’t think Quick Look supports the same, but it should.
wow i wasn’t sure if it was transmission or not but i guess that answers my question.. wish this could get fixed quick
What I did was move the file that you are downloading into some folder other than desktop…this seem to solve the problem for me
heres how to fix it , i hope… i had the same problem but with Acquisition …. anyways
go to the folder you are downloading to..i used a “download” folder…so go in it, command J to open view options…uncheck “show item preview” and then hit “use as defaults”
now quick look will not process through that folder and every second reupdate your quick look for the movie that is still downloading
so far so good with me, hope it helps you all!!!
I turned off “show icon preview” and made my download folder private via the spotlight prefpane and all is good now.
Anyone else having this problem, but don’t run Transmission? I have never installed Transmission and I’m still having the issue. The only apps I have open are Firefox, Mplayer and Activity Monitor. I’m not downloading anything. Any ideas?
Same here. Don’t have Transmission, not downloading anything. Browsing with Camino, Adium on, and Fstream too. Anyone else?
I had the problem with the Quick Look Server CPU/Transmission issue. The problem was I simply had the folder the files were being downloaded to open. As soon as I closed it, the problem went away.
I wasn’t using Transmission, but I had large avi files in a folder. When the folder was open in the Finder, I had the quick look server process running à 120% and the Finder at 89% (yes, at the same time!). So I disabled the “show icon preview” option for that folder and it cleared the problem. Hope this helps.
