Location Based Mobile Content

105435 Interactive Quick Order 1 400

Apple filed a patent that revolves around delivery of mobile location based content to mobile users. This is a technology that I have long waited for and has the ability to change the world. First of all the idea of being able to walk into a store or restaurant and order what you want from your device, pay for it and be notified when it is ready is an awesome concept in and of itself.

The bigger deal comes when everything is wired. You walk into a bar and they know your favorite drink. You are also connected to the local matchmaking system at the the bar. You are then notified about the people in the bar that meet your criteria and that you meet theirs. How will that change the world?

What about the airport. You walk in and are instantly checked in. You are then free to walk around the airport and be notified that it is time to board. Lets say that you are on standby. You are notified if there is a slot available to you. The person that might be waiting to pick you up at your destination is kept abreast of flight status and your status so they know when they need to be at the airport and where your bags are going to be.

Now lets imagine that you check into a hotel. The hotel can make special offers to you, let you book spa packages, schedule a tour or order room service all from your phone. This will allow the hospitality industry to take service to the next level.

There are some downsides as well. This will allow more detailed tracking of your likes, dislikes, movements and habits. The question that we need to answer is if it is worth it. From my point of view, I think we are being tracked anyway so we might as well get some use out of it. What are your thoughts?

Twitter Primer

Twitter

I am a huge fan of Twitter. I love the whole concept of micro blogging and telling the world what you are doing “right now!” Twitter is pretty straight foreword on the surface. There are some tips that you must take into account to get the most out of this awesome service. So you might be asking what you could use such a service for?

I use it to keep my friends and family up to date on what is going on. Some use it to advertise new articles they are publishing on their blogs. While still others use it to let people know about parties and events in their town. And you can do all of this from your mobile phone and SMS!

Twitter supports a feature called direct messaging. This allows you to send text messages to your friends with out having their mobile numbers. All they have to have is a twitter account.

d friends_name What’s going on dude?

During the course of the day you might want to answer a tweet or mention some body. To do this you use the “@” symbol followed by there name. This will highlight there name in the web interface and allow others to click to find out more about the person.

Me: Anyone know of a good place to eat?Friend: @me try the old hickory stake house they have good food.

This should be enough to get you started on twitter. You can always follow me on twitter if you are interested in my exciting life (Yeah right!). My username is Kenotic.

Eee PC first post

I have recently been trying to find ways to go ultra mobile. The idea of being able to be productive and effeciant on the road with out a full laptop is really apealing to me. When ASUS anounced the Eee PC I was intreaged. I had also tried the Nokia N800, but found myself needing more. So this is part two of me trying to go ultra mobile.

So there are some things that I have to do with before I feel fully at home and productive while I am mobile on this thing.

  1. Install an app that will allow me to publish to wordpress

  2. Install a war driving application

  3. Install metasploit

  4. Get 3g data connectivity

These do not seem like that big of a deal, but when you consider the form factor I am working with it is a very cool proposition.

Going to try to use Safari

I have been using firefox for some time now and I am still a huge fan, but it does have some issues. The main ones I am seeing are slowdowns and crashes when I try to load several sites.  So with that I am going to try and make a go with Safari. There are going to be several issues I must solve for, but I feel it will be a good experience.

The main issues are:

  1. Bookmark syscing cross platform ( I think I can solve with with del.icio.us or Google bookmarks)

2. Extensions, some of these things are life saversSo once I solve those I will be posting about my experiences. You might also stay tuned for incremental updates as I face the challenges that are ahead of me.

EDIT: Seems the vidual editing postion of wordpress does not work with Safari. I am not sure if it is Safari’s fault or WordPress, but I am going to have use two browsers for the time being.

CISSPs should know basic networking

Daniel posted an opinion on whether CISSPs should know basic technical skills such as networking. This has been a debate for some time. Some people feel that most CISSPs use there cert for management only. Some say that it is used for gaining a leg up in the security field and getting that golden job. I know several people that have there CISSP and they run the gamut from technical to non-technical. In my opinion every CISSP should have at least a cursory level of understand about technical issues.

I have seen many people with the CISSP that could not configure a home router and when they got into a meeting they could not tell if the wool over their eyes by more technical people. This can be very bad for the company they represent. If it is your job to mitigate risk for your company you must understand the risks that each technical decision poses.

The bottom line is that we are supposed to be security experts. And as an expert we should at least know the basics of any technical topic that could pose a security risk to our companies. I have said it once and I will say it again. Security is not a business preventing function, but a business enabling one. We enable business by eliminating or reducing risk to an acceptable level. How can you know what that level is if you do not understand the basics of the topic?

GPhone

Well there are rumors flying all over about the GPhone. If there is one company that GETS what the mobile market needs it is Google! I full expect a user experience that will far surpass what has been achieved up until this point. I will be at the first place to sell them in my area to buy at least 2.
